Canada is part of North* America, the Continent.
America, a.k.a. The United States of America, is a country.
Other countries we don't call by their full names: The United Mexican States, The Russian Federation, Federative Republic of Brazil, People's Republic of China, etc...
Funnily enough, Canada is one of the few countries that is called -just- canada.

america, or the america's refers to both north and south america. I get what you are saying, I was just being pedantic.

Yeah, but no one calls Canadians 'Americans'
Pedantic or not, your point is pointless.
